Outdoor enclosure safety
Hi
I'm just building a nice big enclosure for my two Hermann's, and was planning on them staying out 24/7. How do you ensure that they are safe from predators e.g. rats, foxes during the night? Do you have any advice for the type of outdoor housing that might be appropriate and safe? Many thanks L |

Mine stay out they have a greenhouse that has a box in it to go in at night if they choose to stay out then it's their choice.

If you have a solid wooden box with a door that can be closed, they should be fine , or a green house or shed.

... ... Which brings me to a similar question!! We're about to move house to somewhere with a lot more land (and quite rural), so I can open up to give the tortoises a massive enclosure - but I won't be able to stick a lid on it (well, not easily). So would this be a problem, they're probably just under 20cm in length now

This is a right old problem isn't it especially when there has just been a post from some one saying about his tortoise having its leg pecked off. (just to add to the worry). The best you can do if you don't cover over - and personally I don't with my larger torts because it is impractical - is make sure there are masses of hiding spaces and or objects. In the wild they will walk point round their area and it probably isn't in the open too much. You can not mitigate all risk, it is just sensible precautions but then do you cater for ground dwellers intent on causing problems...think putting birds off - I have little beach windmills fluttering about , but that's just for me, CB
