Outside idea is this possible ?
Hello, I'm building a 12ft x 3 ft run in 4 sections.
1st totoise house, wooden hut raised 2-3 inches and shade for sunny too hot days. 2nd perpex or caging in a wooden frame with clear plastic wrapping on the outside. Partition which can be removed on summer and warm days. 3rd and 4th Outside caged in a wooden frame. THe top will be a wooden frame with metal caged Now my question : I have bought a wooden tortoise table, but in the outside enclosed warmer part. If I heated and insulated with thermostatic controlled lamps etc.. it to be 75c all year round could they live outside. It would be better for them to be there instead of choping and changing with the seasons? Whats anyone elses experience or advise please ? thanks Harvey |

Keeping Med's outside with heated hut's and cold frames most of the year. When winter set's and air temp's around drop, it's difficult to carry on keeping them active. Mine managed to hang on outside well into November here, but it was a mild one. Cold frames perspex ect can heat up well into 100f, 37c mine will use this sometimes.

THanks fpr the help. Let me advise my plan and hopefully it will work.
I will be putting a house at one end, looks like a small kennel. It'll be insulated and will run a heat pad size - 2ft x 2ft. It'll be connected to a third of the total frame and that part will have the outside covered in plastic. In the winter this part will be isolated from the other 2 thirds. They will be outside parts for summer. Inside part will have water and a basking lamp, in the evening we can put him, her or a pair into the house for the night and keep it warm. I have bought a themostat switch which goes up to 45c and will control the heated pad, I'm thinking heated pad under a substrate -(no idea of what), but if hibinators then down to 5c constant for the winter in the house (kennel part). How does this sound ? Tortoise type - I'd prefer Hermanns but will acommodate any type. We really want to be part of the TT family and if needed I can adapt the pen to be two areas for more tortoises. Last edited by htspike69; 18-12-2011 at 01:42 PM. |

Hmmm I thought I saw your name down to rehome gary the leopard is all.
I wouldn't recommend this kind of set up for a leopard, you would need a shed that is well insulated and well heated..... They grow to a fair size.... I do know people who keep hermanns out all year and then hibernate in the winter. |

Hi Neddy, Yes your right I was looking at the leopard and was intending to keep Gary indoors but my ideally situation is to be outisde with Hermanns, but we are happy to adapt to any species. For us its to provided forever home for someone elses loved one they have unfortunately had to part with.
