RS, I suggested to call them, to try to find out if it was a scam letter, asking for fines to be paid etc. If it's a legit letter but a mistake, you are right to suggest a proper paper trail and for it to be sent recorded.
What about my friends in CID Chelsea? would they be able to help if Marg needed? Karen

The only reason I am talking like this is because I ended up in court with Surrey police who were trying to argue that the ticket that came to us was me driving (not even my car), despite me offering evidence to the contrary they took it to court My wife ironically works for surrey police, but from a professional standpoint it's irrelevant. I did actually win my case (defended myself), but I'm vary wary about following the official routes wherever possible, plus being able to prove I had responded within 2 days, then it took them 2 weeks to get back to me went in my favour for being diligent. What Marg needs is that photo, which should be fine, just a recorded letter back stating 'I do not believe this was us, therefore I require a photo to help identify the driver'. Then being able to see if it's a mis-read plate (highly likely), or a cloned plate, will take you to the next course of action.

A friend of mine from Sheffield had the police turn up at his workplace one day and took him away for questioning. They then asked him where he was at a particular time and date and told him they were questioning him in relation to a murder in Norwich. He'd never even been to Norwich.
After a few hours questioning they realised that somebody had cloned his number plate. |

The day we moved into our house (and four days before we were due to get married) the police came and tried to arrest my husband. At the time, two different new neighbours had popped round to try to convert me to their version of Christianity, the previous owner hadn't moved out, two large artic lorries full of our belongings blocked the small country lane where we live, there was a van behind them trying to deliver our two new fridges and dishwasher, and the rest of the new neighbours were helping the previous owner move out by loading her stuff into wheelbarrows and onto the local milkman's float (she was moving down the road). My husband said to the police, "well I'm not the man you think I am, but please take me out of here because wherever you're taking me, has got to be better than this"
It turned out they thought he was the previous owner's husband who had driven into something and driven off - he was caught on cctv and they traced his car to our address.

Update on this thing.
We have had a letter from the Met Police today, it is all ok, they say they looked again at the photographic evidence & it wasn't our car........OMG that is such good news, I can't believe how awful this has been. Marg.

This happened to my Dad when he bought a VW camper van off ebay, the guy selling it didn't blank out the plate so people trawl ebay and such looking for similar cars and get the plate cloned
