Default Hides..

Where best to have the hide, currently down the cool end but my tortoise seems to be burrowing under some wood I have in the warm end. Would it be dangerous for me too provide another hide but down the warm end?

I do wonder sometimes about that Amy but mine dig right down under the lamp even and or heat emitter and stay there all night, and or day sometimes, so I don't think it would harm (clearly watch out safety wise if cardboard or similar under or near a heat source). cb

This is tricky as mine tend to 'move' their coconut hide to near the lamp and dig down in it. To be honest I leave them where they want to be and as long as the substrate they dig into is damp I don't think it would be a problem. X x x x hugs x. X

Housing should always be at the colder end. Then they have a choice where to be. Some just like to burrow where ever takes their fancy:0) Especially if the tortoise is new to a keeper. Eventually they do use the house when it gets darker and the light levels drop.

Thank you for your replies, will consider getting another hide tomorrow, just a tad worried about him getting stuck under the wood. He's buried himself good and proper for the night. Had he worried when I couldn't find him until I moved the substrate lol.

see what you mean. If you can I would try and check the max temp it could get to under the wood bit. May actually find it is cooler anyway. If it goes above 29 personally I would move the wood if you can just in case he does get stuck if that is possible. If too hot directly under lamp too place a small rock there maybe. CB

My hides are at both ends. He tends to stay in the warm end and casually stroll through the cool everyone and again.

I used to have pieces of cork bark for my hatchlings and found the soil underneath would stay nice and damp/humid for far longer than any exposed soil when sprayed. The torts loved it and would always choose to sleep there.

Do you spray the torts as well if they are in the vicinity? I always thought they may get too hot basking with the water spray on them but mine seem to like it - some don't and move out of the way. Reckon its ok though unless told otherwise, CB
