What an amazing looking thing. Looks like something Hollywood would dream up rather than being an actual living creature! That beak looks like it could take a finger or two as well!

Do the common snappers catch their prey in a similar manner - ie lure etc?

No, they are stealth hunters, but they rely on a lightening skike from their very long necks too catch their prey. This is similar to Soft shells. The Alligator snapper has a short neck, and turret like rotation. A very different strategy!!

Fascinating - it would be interesting to know about the evolution of these animals. When did the common & the alli diverge from their common ancestor? The alli looks pretty archaic. Is this an illusion or is at living fossil (rather like the Coelcanth / shark)?
