Hermanns, horsfields and spur thighs are all good begginer tortoises as well as red foots. Sounds to me like a horsfield would suit you as you want a torotise with personality. All the horsfields I've met are really great characters. And they dont get huge, but neither do hermanns or spur thighs.

Horsfields have great personalitys ..my to are completely mad
