Hiya
Ello
Im a noob i dont have a tortoise yet...but ive been researching for the past year and thought id join to learn more. Ive never met a tortoise in real life (well handled one) something i obviously want to do before i become a proud owner! I also keep land snails, hermit crabs, guinea pigs, Sammi the staffi, Halo the Senegal parrot and 2 cats - Muse & glimmer So any advice & help would be greatly apprecieated |

hi m8 welcome, this is a friendly forum and probably the best tortoise forum for information. well done for doing your research first.
My advice is save yourself some money and buy from a breeder. You look like your in a good location to get torts too. you live close to piglet who occasionally breeds horsfields hermans and med spur thighs which are the best first tortoises. |

I was thinking of either hermans or horsfields as they are the ones recommended as first tortoises

hi again
yes they are recomended for 1st timers but if you do your research first there are other types that i am sure you could care for just as well my first are 4 redfoots i think you have to go with your feelings aswell if you are getting a dog for example you would also consider size cost health issues need for exercise personality hairiness speed smelll food intake etc etc so i think we need to look at these things as well when we consider torts like do you want a shy tort tort that hibernates a tort that has more personality than the average a big tort a little tort oh sorry i am rambling on linda x |

Hehe ...no its all helpful
Health care, feeding costs, housing size arent a problem... I have a very good exotic vet 200 yrds from me. I would be looking to keep diet as natural as possible (weeds, grasses etc). I will be using a tort table for inside and have a large secure back garden for summer (already have large runs and grow grasses, weeds etc for the guinea pigs lol). Id like a tort with personality...it would have to be quirky to put up with me lol and id like one who isnt massively big (not leopard size, ive heard they get huge!) Hibernation scares me a little...is that normal lol!?! i'd worry something would go wrong and the poor tortie would suffer, so id have to hibernate in the fridge... |
