Well I haven't come across any cons of keeping hermanns yet.

I have only kept hermanns and they are great! The tropical species have to kept warm all year round and the larger ones really do need a lot of space in the long term. I personally wouldn't get a sultaca unless I had a lot of space and finance for the heating bills in the future.

Horsefields can be quite sensitive to damp and that is partly why I went for hermanns because although they don't like it wet and cold they can tolerate a certain amount of damp - as long as its not too cold as well.

Again this is a personal opinion but I believe that to have a good enough quality of life in the long term the tortoise should have acess to outside at least part of the year. In my case this rules out lots of species due to the weather and limited size of my garden.

From what I've read, Iberas, Hermanns and Horsefileds are the best for beginners in the UK.

What can I say - thanks again guys, I've contacted someone with a 4 year old horsefield tortoise for sale, got to call them back so fingers crossed that goes well and I'll have my first tortoise.

Then I'll need to get everything needed before picking him up.
