Hi
Fingerprinting is £1.50 for the first tortoise and £1 for each tort after that the 50p being the postage. With a health check we weigh and measure the tort and then work out the Jackson ratio to see whether the tort is under or over weight. The most important thng with this is records over time to see what is 'normal' for any particular animal. The owner then has a chat with an expert keeper and eyes, ears, nose, shell, mouth, beak, nails, skin and diet. All this is recorded on a 'passport' which is brought to each health check (2 a year). We find the records most useful. If we feel an animal is unwell first of all it is refered to the vet nurse for a second opinion and then a good vet recommended in the area. The notes are made on the form and enable us to see improvement/usual problem for the animal. We have never done stool samples before but you have put a thought into my ind as we do have a powerful microscope and whilst we would not have time to do this for all torts and if healthy not sure necessary but if a tort presented with diarrohea then we could check for pars sites or worms if the weight suggested it. Normally we refer to the vet in these cases. Hope this answers some of your questions.

Cheltenham Health Check 2010
I attended for the first time one of these events last year, and have to say, that I was most impressed with the standard of service, offered to the 100+ visitors whom attended in a five hour period on that day. The highly efficient process, reminded me of a very well run human health clinic. The owners, with their animals were processed in a very helpful and hygenic manner with a formal reception/ register procedure followed by a very smooth operation of inspection, note taking and recommendations.
To me especially, the use of a fantastic "Animal passport", which recorded the essential information was a great idea. The record of each animal over time, is I am sure a highly valuable asset to any subsequent visit to a Veterinarian, if and when required. To have accurate records for each animal, especially when measured over long periods of time. Typically updated at least twice a year is very helpful indeed. I commend this service, to Tortoise Keepers in the areas of Cheltenham and or West Midlands and note the at least one Veterinary School in Scotland is seeking to offer a service in a similar manner. Very well done to all those whom organise and conduct this valuable service to Tortiose Keepers. |
