In the case of the OP... it does look cosmetic and the animal looks quite healthy as far as I can tell from the photo.

Ed you seem to stuck on "poorly" as a verb, there is also an Adverb.

Just because something is described as ill (adverb), doesn't necessarily mean it is poorly (verb) !

I would agree with poorly grown, not ill, but badly grown, the shell margin looks like it's growing down at the back and not starting to fan out as it should , thus not allowing much space for the legs, possibly! Also thanks Levi for explaining poorly

So it would appear that the tortoise in your banner is poorly grown.

I'm curious as to how you can tell the rate of growth and type of nutrition a tortoise received by looking at it?

The tortoise is about 4 to 5 inches... the flare is just beginning at that size. If it is a female the flare is even less pronounced.

It is slightly pyramided... you can't deny that. It looks far from natural.

...and no, I'm not fishing. I'm simply demonstrating to the op that there are nonjudgemental keepers who try to be objective in their opinions on the husbandry of chelonians.

As to using some specific references... the op has to be careful to try and use references that are objective and are not biased towards a very specificly slanted agenda.

One more time... growth that does not appear as 'normal' is not an indicator of MBD. This would mean that a good portion of the wild population has MBD because such growth does occur in the wild.

You might want to change your banner photo.

Honestly... if you look at the margins of the scutes you can see where you changed your husbandry to where the margins are growing irregularly... aka... poorly... I'm just saying.
