The argument that tortoises might get stolen from a shed is, in my view, completely spurious. Otherwise known as not a significant factor. Stolen from a shed? More likely to be stolen from a house with a bright light shining on it all winter.

Not a significant factor but it is a factor considering that it is being mentioned in a forum. This indicates to me that it probably happened more than once.

I don't agree with the last line considering the tortoises are kept in a shed that is probably forgotten until the spring... pretty far cry from a 'lighted house'.

Umbridge is a university town in England I thought?

I have said in the past that I mave have to do it in the future and the reason would be exactly that.. no need to care for them for 3 months. Plenty folks admit to that, there's nothing wrong in it as far as I can see, as you have pointed out

I am a hibernator too - for all the positive reasons that have been listed.

I've also found they come leaping and bounding out of hibernation, and more happy to munch on weeds that they haven't liked before. It's like their programming has been re-set.

Ummm sorry Jon, may have been a one-off but someone local to me had a tort pinched from a shed whilst boxed up and hibernating. Probably chancers though that went to rob the shed and found the tort by accident

It's a good list of pros and cons that Helen and Ed have put together - but at the end of the day it is down (altogether now) to your own decision.

BTW, Helen was just pointing out that they have been stolen from unguarded sheds in the past during hibernation, she's not actually saying it will happen if you hibernate your tort

To be honest one of the reasons I don't hibernate mine is because I can't be bothered. It all sounds like a lot of hassle to me. Winding down for however long it is, the whole finding a suitable receptacle and putting them into the chosen method. Then weighing and checking them every few days, worrying about them constantly and then the wind up.
So much easier to feed them every day and do whatever else is required, like bathing etc., how hard is looking after a tort?

They would be recharged after being forced into dormancy.

Yeah that's the thing, not much trouble at all. I can understand though if some folks have lots of them and maybe don't have the space to keep them all up
