Weird question for Dan

Thought one of my Margie females head looked swollen on one side whilst bathing her & wondered if she might have an ear infection. I realised it wasnt her ear but the area directly above the "typhanic"sp scale & I have noticed this getting damaged - or so I have thought lots of times before.

I had thought maybe they had caught them in the past & it was damage that was causing the problem but now not sure & it only seems to be my Marginateds that have this occuring... (its as if the area behind this upper scale gets too fat & bursts through the area) any ideas please?

Its occured on her right side in this picture, directly behind her eye:

It could be an infection. Hard to tell though and like you thought it's not in the ear. I'd say to keep an eye on it and if it gets bigger, than it's time to go to the vets.

Ive noticed it on quite a few of my margies Dan, young male had it last week, its as if that area gets too fat & bursts through the skin- will see if I can get a picture of hi head to compare.

I know I don't have Dannys knowledge or expertise so I hope you're not offended at me making a comment...

The area above the the ear is nothing but muscle tissue. It is one of the few places on the skull that does have relatively thick muscle tissue. If it is occuring on other tortoises it is probably increased muscle tissue due to good feeding. It should be symetrical in relation to the other side of the head. If it is not symetrical... I would take mine to the vet if that were the case.

Hi Ed, thanks for your input. Anyones input is welcome, I just thought Danny might have experienced it & tell me straight away. Funnily enough this tort has traditionally been underweight & this time when I checked her she was spot on 100% on haileys ratio! So what you have said would fit. Here is another picture, this time from underneath:

I shall keep an eye on it.

Even though fuzzy... it is symetrical. I don't see a problem... but... I'm not Danny.
