Megaray alturnative
Hi, As the subject says, i need an alturnative bulb to a megaray. At the rate its going it could be months before i get my buld replaced, so i need one now.
I have no faith in the company that makes megaray at the moment. So whats the options? And what would you suggest. Ideally a bulb with the same fitting at MR so i dont have to buy a new holder aswell. Cheers Ross |

Hmmm...thats a tough one rosshan. Since the next best ones - Komodo UV Sun and T Rex Active UV heat both have parts from Westron Industries - who make the MR bulb.
A more experienced member will be along soon. Expect Jon Ozric, Alan or Kirkie may be best to advise. Maybe try the Solar Glo, Lucky Reptile... I would think of it as more something that is not gonna be the best in quality - but maybe are better in reliability - which us MR owners are craving for at the moment. Think of it as a temporary measure rosshan. Or just go with separates. A nice UVA/UVB full spectrum strip from Arcadia and a good halogen bulb. It might only be needed for a couple of months whilst the outside temps and weather gets better. See what other opinions are offered. Thats my 2pence worth for ya anyway. xx |

There's Zoo Med, T Rex Active, and Komodo one's, they have all had fail ratings, so i would by local if possible, easier to take back.

Im going to a nearby pet shop tomorrow. But they dont sell the combi bulbs, they do sell the strip uv lights tho (UVB Repti Glo Fluorescent). But that and the starter is like £40. But at least when i change the lamps it only £15.
They also do - Sun Glo Day Light Basking Lamp , are these suitable? Last edited by rosshan; 26-03-2010 at 08:37 PM. |

Does the shop sell the Arcadia D3 strip lights - I read that these (this was one I had before my MR) - are one the best strip ones about.
Get the Arcadia D3 UVA/UVB strip Here is a google shopping link http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=...ed=0CB0QrQQwAA Its up to you though Rosshan, perhaps just take a notepad and note down some different brands. Maybe other local shops will have a more varied stock. Or just get it online, next day delivery. See if there is anymore advice along later. Keep your options open. xx |

Nah just the reptiglo. Unfortunately i know of few reptile shops in my area. I drove a 200mile round trip to get Eddie.
But i'll just have a look tomorrow i think. Thanks Rach. Honestly tho, i cant believe Eddies lack of activity since the megaray failed. She's not happy at all. |

Just think things through and just get the best you can. Weigh it all up from advice you get on here. Dont trust what the pet shops say though, well, I wouldnt.
For guidance on separates ross, read this. http://www.uvguide.co.uk/fluorescenttuberesults.htm The Exo Terra Repti Glo fared well, and my old one the Arcadia. I mainly got mine as it did well in these experiments, and also is full spectrum. But they also talk about enhancing effects such as buying a reflector. It might not be a bad alternative to think about - just for the short term. I have a sylvannia 50w halogen 30%spread flood - as my basking bulb. I only have it on during early morning and late afternoon. But if you do a google search you will find these I think I got mine on Lightbulbs 4 u or something like that. They go for about 4-5quid each. I got 2 and they last about 4-6months per time (depending on the usage) Hope that helps. xx |
