Hi, it isn't uncommon for them to have some of the egg sac left, please try not to worry too much (easier said than done, i know). They need to rest as it is hard work for them hatch and the sac actually absorbs quite quickly. As said earlier, keep up the humidity. What i do is move the egg into a seperate container, still kept in the incubator, i fold paper towel, dampen it slightly, place the egg on it then fold more paper towel over three times and that i place across the top of the container with the egg in it. I was only working out earlier how many hatchlings i have had this year, 94 and more hatching at the moment, hermann's, redfoots and sulcata eggs also still filling my incubators. Good luck, i'm sure it'll be fine it's just a matter of time.

I'm sure you'll both be fine I had my first ever egg hatch on the 1st of oct, called him Lucky, weighed in at 7grams, he was the only one of 5 eggs to survive, and I cant express how privileged, honoured and Lucky it feels, Ha Ha the first born is always more special, I cant advice you what/how to do things but there are always some very knowledgeable, helpful people on here, all the best.

Yes you were a wee bit off So 61 days and hatching with a large yolk sack. That I'm afraid is not normal for a Hermanns tortoise. Mine usually spend only 12 to 24 hours in the egg and come out with basicly no yolk sack. I can only think your humidity was to low. Low humidity tends to make hatchlings hatch before they have used up their yolk sack. Your temperatures were probably a bit on the low side also, because he should have gone probably another 7 to 10 days with a sack that big. I don't like leaving early hatchlings in the egg much over 3 days (after pipping). Bacteria can build up in the egg under the yolk and there is always a chance of the hatchling breaking the yolk by struggling. I put my hatchlings with a yolk sack in a plastic container (that I have smeared petrolium jelly on the bottom of). This prevents the yolk from drying and sticking to anything before it's absorbed. I keep the hatchling in the incubator until the yolk is gone.

Danny
