can they breed?
I have recently bought two hermanns, from different breeders. One is 2yrs and the other is 12 months. At the moment I am enjoying getting back into tortoise keeping and finding out more and more about how to keep them properly. This is what I intend to keep my priorities as, however I have a question for the distant future. (more curiosity at the mo)
I have one hermanni b. and one hermanni h. At the moment (although I know it is ar too early to know for sure) an educated guess says that the hermanni h is male and the hermanni b is female. If this is true, will they ever be able to breed - or because they are different sub species are they not able to breed? What would they look like if they did breed? |

i think that most keepers keep the subspecies seperate because of the usual reasons of diseases and things but i am not 100% sure,
Th torts could breed and they probably would breed sometimes in the wild but i think breeding of different subspecies is not recommended, sum1 else will probably know the reasons better than i do. |

Hi Monty
No certainly don't allow them to breed in the future hermanni hermanni is a totally different region and pure to its type and range as is hermanni boettgeri to its own , a hybrid would probably resemble the female from the pairing but as i said please dont encourage them to hybridize species and sub speices should all ways be kept true to type Darren
