Question for breeders: Incubating

How often, if ever, do you incubate for a male tortoise?

Never if I can help it<g>.
But unless you have a one hundred percent accurate thermometer, then you cant guarrentee
what sex tort you get. So you can get mixed clutches.

I designed my incubator so the temperature varies between 29 and 31 C so I get a good mix.

I Incubate using three incubators occasionally four all are used for different types tropical , meds ,and savanh types all are set at different temps

1/Redfoot/yellowfoots/elongated at 28.5 clutches should be mixed at these temps.

2/Horsfields, Ibera,Hermans 31.5 for prodomently female but this temp will also give male offspring,of ones I have hatched at this temp that are now sexable are 80% female.

3/Indian stars at 31 mixed clutch

I do have a fourth incubator that I occassionaly use for requested hatches so sometimes I wil incubate a Ibera clutch at 29.5 for males or higher the temp to 32.5 for a complete female clutch.

Thanks guys, was just curious about my chances of finding a Thb breeder with males in the future - for when I want a boytoy for the girlies

There is usually an abundance of males, its the females that are harder to get.

Really? Oops lol Oh well, the girls will be happy lol

Of course the next question is whether I'd find an older male when the girls are older (and outside!) or I'd have to take my chances on "I incubated for a male" like I have with my girls.. Hmm lol

You would almost certainly be able to find an older male on one of the rehoming lists. They come up quite regularly.

The odds of you finding an older male are quite good when you consider keepers raise animals and find they have a group of randy males and no females. This seems to be a common problem.

To be fair then, I fancy my chances on this forum of finding a male - there are breeders coming out of the woodwork!

No worries Peter, there'll always be space for rehomers at our place (once we get the flipping thing!!)
