Joe was my husband's 7th birthday present over 41 years ago and wasn't a hatchling, so we're guessing at 50 years old.
He measures 258mm and weighs in at 2.85kg after a lean year. He has been ill for the first time ever this spring, not recovering his normal zest for life until mid August. With no weight gain this year at all we are not hibernating him. Joe is making his feelings about being confined to quarters quite clear and is generally being a nuisance and mating with anything vaguely tortoise shaped (very vaguely!) It's been quite a relief to know that, as long as he's had a good few hours toasting, he can go outside for a couple of hours daily throughout the winter to let off steam and attack the weeds / garden plants of his choice.
