Weeg ID'ed number four and I missed it! Its Geum. Thanks! I found some pictures of the flower and these are exactly what I have.
http://garden.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Geum I found a few tortoise links that say they are edible but high in Tannins so feed sparingly. As I said mine tend to ignore them. |

pocket size book of common plants
Hi
I too am learning! But I found a book in local WHSmith its a collins little gem & tiny so you can easily carry it with you. It has pictures & descriptions of common plants/weeds & I am going through it putting a big blue tick on items they can eat & a big red cross on things they cant, I also note which items are higher in oxylates (when I know) Its tempting to stick with what you know & recognise to be safe but also I recognise that the more varied their diet is the better. The other night I sat & looked at all the seeds for sale on ebay complete with pictures & ticked some more off, im gradually getting my book finished. I too have tried to dig up & replant weeds but they dont seem to take. Amazing I spent years trying to erradicate weeds from my lawn unsuccessfully & now I want to encourage them, no luck! Im also growing (or attempting to grow!) seeds which are outside in trays & growing very slowly. Does anyone know if they respond better indoors & or with a little heat? Just thought this may help until your more familiar with things |

I picked up a book recently "Readers Digest Wild Britain Series - Wild Flowers". It has illustrations and descriptions of hundreds of British wild flowers and plants indexed by flower colour (which is helpful at certain times of the year). It was £8 in WH Smiths. Very good book and also pocket sized.

It even has notes on the toxicity of the plants where relevant, very good.
