sounds like you did well i must confess i think light sussex are pretty birds but have avoided them in the past because they have a reputation for going broody.

Good deal Alison, I like Norfolk greys and they are pretty rare breed.

Terry Depends what strain of light sussex you get the Bantam version are incredible broodies as are the true pure standerad strain but these days most Light sussex offered for sale are commercial hybrid type and the broody desire had been bred out of them in favour of egg producion .

I wish we could have chickens, lovely fresh free range eggs! But the deeds of our house forbid it!

thanks for the info Darren, i will see what pullets are available this year, as i am almost chickenless after the polecat visited last year, not that im to bothered about egg production, i just like to see them scratching about in the woods .i have always had a soft spot for hens some individuals can be so friendly, when they see me they run over as fast as they can, it just makes you feel wanted (could be the handfull of corn i throw for them)

Do you not have a milkman mine has his own chickens and sells the eggs. We also have local farms that sell eggs. We buy duck eggs and sometimes goos eggs they are very nice but cost £1.00 each They are nice with a gammon steak and home made chips
