1st Egg Hatching!
Hello!
I wish I could be on here more often but I have just been so busy.... I ended up with 3 clutches of 5 this winter from my redfoots. Getting impatient because the first clutch should be hatching anytime... But I came home today and my first egg is hatching!!!! There is an opening the size of a nickel. Its head and leg are exposed and its alive Just wondering what do I do now????? I read to leave him in the incubator but in a seperate container... should there be substrate? water? Any info would be appreciated!!! Thank you!!

That's great news Jessica. Use a plastic container and just smear the bottom with petrolium jelly. This will let whatever is left of the yolk sack be absorbed without drying out. Once the yolk sack is completely absorbed than you can set them up in an enclosure.

Do I need to do anything else? help it out of the shell? How long does it usually take to come out of the shell....He seems kind of tired should I be worried? Do I need to to put a moist towel over the egg?
I don't think I have petroleum jelly... is there anything else I can use? Thank you!

Deep Breath Jessica It usually takes 2 or 3 days to come out of an egg for Redfoots. You can drap a wet piece of kitchen roll over the egg (making a little tent). No not really anything else you can use, but you do have time to go out and get some tomorrow.

LOL... Sorry! First time mom! I will get some tomorrow. I have put him in a seperate container within the incubator with the tent. I'm sure I will be on here again very soon!
Thank You AGAIN for your help! The yolk feeds them for a few days up to a week right? so I will not need to worry about food yet.... I'm going to bed, so I will stop the questions for now .... If I can sleep!

Hello Again!
Just an update... I know you said I have a couple of days... But do i need to help the little one out of the shell? The front legs and head are completely exposed. It has opened both eyes and its mouth. I feel like it is getting stronger but still rests alot. I can feel the back legs kicking and see a little bit of the yolk sack.... It started on Thursday and now it is Sunday! I'm increasing the humidity... Anything else I can do to help it out? Is there anyway to tell if it is male or female when they are this little? I don't want to name it wrong.... My Male was prenamed when I got him.... Helga. Poor guy! Thank You!

Hi, I don't think you can sex them from such a young age, It usually takes until they're a juvenile. How about you give him/her a unisex name? That way, whatever sex it is, the name will be OK! And congratulations on the little tort

Hope everything's going ok, I'm sure some one with more experience than myself will be along soon but I know it does take time and is best to let it hatch slowly and keep it in the incubator clean and warm while this is happening, its a very nervous/anxious time, hope you've got your camera at the ready best of luck xxx
