Default Sharpie?

If I want to mark one of the Hermann's shells to tell it apart from the others what can I use? Would a sharpie be okay?

Most people use nail varnish or tippex as both can be removed with nail varnish remover i would not use a permanent marker pen

usually there is some little mark or shell difference, colour difference that you can tell them apart, i have 6 and i can tell them all apart without having to mark them x

A sharpie would work just fine and is not harmful.

I use india ink with a layer of nylon nail protector over it. You can do the same thing with the Sharpie... cover the mark with the nylon nail protection. I've got marks lasting over 10 yrears so far.

thanks all - surprisingly I would have thought a sharpie was safer than nail varnish ... but there you go.

Are tortoise shells effectively the same material (keratin) as nails and hooves?
