i know the feeling, i was in the garden the other day pulling some overgrown grass from the tort enclosure, and i got bitten on the toe by Herbie, the little monster got me when i wasnt expecting it. i think it was the shock more than the pain that spooked me lol but i dropped all the grass id pulled out and stood up pretty quick

Maybe Herbie liked the grass where it was and didn't appreciate your re-organising!

Did they give you ideas on just what they are inspecting? Is this dealing with husbandry or just making sure you actually have those animals? What happens if a person "fails" the inspection?

I submitted an application to DEFRA in Bristol about 2.5 mths ago for four duplicate CITES Certificates. I had mislaid the original certificates, so I contacted the original breeder and she provided me with the Certificates numbers of the tortoises that I had purchased from her [all the information was recorded in her record books - very organised].
I heard nothing for about 6 weeks then I received an email asking me for the measurements of the tortoises. I provided these by email, then nothing for about 4 weeks. Then out of the blue I received a call one evening last week from an inspector from DEFRA to inspect my set-up. I rang him back, he said that he wanted to come and see the tortoises - take measurements, photos of the tortoises and check that they were UK bred. How you can tell that a tortoise is UK bred by looking at them I just don't know. He told me that I apparently have horsefields [which I don't] and hermanns [which I do]. One of the other questions that he asked was whether I had any other tortoises here. I confirmed that I have another 9 and told him what they were. That was Tuesday last week and I am just waiting for him and a trainee Inspector to visit!! The Inspector said that they regularly go and inspect would be breeders [and I was just No. 10 or whatever the lucky number was for that month] Oh great!! I have since rang DEFRA in Bristol to confirm that the inspection is legitimate and apparently it is!!!

No need to be. Especialy if you are respectful and accommodating. I have yet to meet or talk to an official (both in the US and the UK) who was threatening when treated with respect.
Even if they find something wrong they all seem to appreciate those keepers that try to work within the law and will do almost anything to produce a positive outcome. Considering this is also a training visit that is also a plus in your favor. I'll bet it turns out as a pleasant and positive experience with a good attitude. Quote:
