I know for the herc side... Phoebe and Daisy are missing the inguinal scutes that boettgeris have...

I'm sure danny with explain better!

It's the seam between the pectoral and humeral scutes of the plastron. On a T.h.hercegovinensis it's a ski slope, on a T.h.boettgeri it's either a slightly sloped line or a bumpy line (like mogels ).

thanks Danny you have me worried with my to hercs hatchlings now!!
been looking at the herc parents and hatchlings all day
i thought the chances of crosses were very low?
before i knew about hercs i found out all my males at the time were hercs and couldnt get a fertile egg out of loads layed.as soon as they were in there right groups the fertile eggs came almost streight away

The fertility rate when crossed is low add that to the fact that Testudo hermanni hercegovinensis eggs need to be incubated at lower temperatures than T.h.boettgeri eggs and you won't get many cross eggs to hatch if you are incubating at the normal UK temperatures of 31 to 32C.
The crossing does happen in the wild where the 2 subspecies meet though.
