Default hibernation

my torts are indoors

at first i fell into the trap of getting viv , now bought a lovely handmade one
vick and madge are super eaters very active

they are russian torts

being indoors can they healthy not go through hibernation
if i keep their heat lamp .day light on as normal

even thought about putting them in the viv (one glass door taken out)
to keep it warm at one end

love to hear your thoughts

as it will be my first ever winter with them

thanxxx sarah

If you have only recently got your torts, its recommended that you don't hibernate the first year so that you can get to know them. Hibernation is a personal choice, I personally like to hibernate, but many don't

as you have only had your torts for a short while by all means over winter them this year, dont throw your viv away just yet as you may struggle to provide optimum temperatures when the weather gets colder.
trust me in two months time this forum will be awash with people wanting to know why their animals have slowed down and become less active, its all down to being able to supply and maintain the correct temperatures.
i have used vivs in the past but now use tables, although during the colder parts of the year i use bubble wrap to create a greenhouse type of enclosure to conserve energy.
do whats easiest for you and enjoy the hobby

I over wintered one of mine last year, (i only got her in January, 4 months old) but didn't have any trouble mainaining the temperature in her table.
I wouldn't recommend that you hibernate your tortoise this winter as you will have only had it a short time.

Yes I agree with whats been said above. Your first year, you have just got the tortoise, and I think it gives you time to ask questions, gain confidence and this will help you make a decision for next year.
Not saying overwintering is easy - especially if its bitterly cold outside. It can be quite difficult to maintain good temps. Its all about keeping the warmth contained in the room and the table, and trying to provide a good diet. The diet in itself can be hard to maintain. ...But there are plenty of people that can advise about that, me included.
Read up on hibernation posts, and overwintering posts. Neither are wrong. Its a choice that we all make, and when it comes to next year you will be much better positioned to know what is best. Good luck. xx
