Pyramiding or Paranoid?
Hello,
I wonder if anybody would mind looking at photos of our nearly 2-year old Med Spur Thigh please? I took these photos this morning, am concerned that his shell may be showing signs of pyramiding? http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...hp?albumid=709 He has a diet of weeds (mixed leaf in winter when no weeds) alternated each day with Neutrobol or Calcium powder on them. Once a week he has pellets. Fresh water each day. Currently under a UV strip and Heat Lamp 12 hours a day (outdoor trips in garden now weather improving). He seems very fit, active and healthy am just a bit concerned about shell as he's growing..... Any feedback/advice gratefully received. Thank you, A |

Hi Achilles, some tort keepers give their soil substrate a bit of a watering, not too damp, just a little bit damp, in the theory that in the wild, late afternoon the torts dig a scrap/shallow burrow and settle there for the night, and this substrate is damper than the surface soil, thereby slightly rehydrating the tort, or at least slowing down dehydration. Some torts in captivity dry out too much under their lamps and unless given regular warm baths in shallow water, may dehydrate which is unhealthy for them. It's not really enough to just leave a dish of water about. Additionally, dehydration is said to be a contributing factor to pyramiding. That said, I think your tort looks great. Love spur-thighs!

I think your tort looks great too! Can't see a problem with the shell at all.

Looking at the photos... I'd suggest not changing a thing except for adding a humid hide if you don't have one already... very nice looking tortoise.

Do you know what the plant on the right is? Not the dracena, the other one. I am wondering if it is a Paddle Plant, a plain one without the red edges? It looks a bit like a plant I have but it's a bit tricky to tell from the photos. http://Www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/s....asp?catID=676 |
