I have absolutely no doubt at all that my Pedro is as thick as two short planks.

Except for when I'm trying to creep up on her when she's sweetly asleep - then she's got radar! I suppose that's not intelligence though.

Had my male herman in side alley today as wet and thought the girls could do without him bothering them. He's spent a happy day trying different ways to get out of the catflap! They are certainly determined if not intelligent!

I think they are clever and have good memories.

One of mine climbs on his log which is in the middle of the table top to look out. He then stretches to try and reach the edge of the enclosure so seems to have worked out that he get out that way if it was nearer to the edge. Crafty.

I think I need to build up the sides to stop him thinking about it.

I've been thinking about this.

I've had Lolly since Oct 2010, and initially I though she was intelligent, but slowly I came to the conclusion that it's more a mix of curiosity and instict, rather than intelligence.

And she is incredibly curious about everything around her. I may even call it being nosey - she just needs to know and investigate. I think this is would look like intelligence until you get to know them better.

If intelligence is problem solving then I don't see tortoises doing well compared to cats and dogs. But I think they have more wisdom than humans. Where did our intelligence get us? We cannot live within our resources and degrade our environment. Intelligence looks a bit over rated to me.

When my Tortoise, Tommy, goes to my parents on his holidays he can remember how to get from where his table is kept in the utility room, all the way to the living room without making a wrong turn.

They live in a big house and it's probably a 5 minute walk for him, but he manages to do it without fail every time - even though he has to walk through 4 separate rooms and there's a load of places he could go the wrong way. He definitely remembers the route.

Yes they have an excellent sense of place but will try to move directly leading to some climbing challenges!

Desperately trying to think of an example of intelligence because they deserve to have some but I can't, they are just thick. I'll carry on thinking about it though I might come up with something.
