I think out in the wild the nap around midday in the shade as its too hot.

However keeping them yourself it depends really. If there isn't enough light or heat they will sleep more....... Over summer my enclosure wasn't bright enough and they would not wake up till 11am then go to sleep from 2pm - 4pm. As soon as I adjusted the lighting their sleeping pattern changed from getting up within hour of light being switched on.... about 8am. Daisy goes to sleep about 6pm and Phoebe around 8pm. (Sometimes later). So the extra lighting made a great difference! I have also read that the more hungry they are the more active they are and vice versa... this is why (I think) some owners feed every other day whilst over wintering them so they stay up & active. (I may be wrong there )

Also it depends on the tortoise.... I think some are more lazy and sleepy than others.

My tortoises now I have adjusted the light do not properly sleep during the day... I think they nap whilst sunbathing.... but not proper sleeping.

Hope this helpsx
