It's actually got a genetic problem, not sure if it's the pictures but it's actually quite deformed, the shell is really domed and the anal scutes are non existent. The tail is fully formed and has the pursed lips of the tail.
Any eggs laid will have to be destroyed to stop the genetic traits being passed on. Last edited by tortoise_dude; 16-07-2010 at 10:53 PM. |

I was simply asking to see what other people thought, as I said, I thought it would be fun for people to have a go at sexing a tortoise that is difficult to be sexed.

Other than the tail Josh, the tortoise doesn't look deformed at all. The plastron is perfect and the anal scutes are quite large and look well grown. It does though look like the tail does not have a nail on it.
It would be great to see some close-up pictures of that tail. Danny

No, she hasn't laid any eggs. I'd be shocked if she turned out to be male given her age, though.

Should have been more clear regarding the anal scutes, there is no shape to them is what I meant, they are completely straight edged and don't form a 'v' or a 'u' shape.
I'll try and get a video of her walking to show the deformity better. |

The Anal scutes look perfectly normal to me, for a male at least. With regards to the tail I have seen this before on a rehomer Ibera that passed through here. The animal came to me as a female, but this was soon proved wrong after a bath. Sure enough it was a male with a 'female' tail. That animal also exhibited very similar anal scutes to this.
