3 x Hermans outdoor housing
Hi I have 3 Hermans they are all 2.5 yrs old, I would like to move them outside as they are currently in a 4x2 indoor house (far too small I think).
Can they stay outside all year if I provide a heated house, or will they need to be in from September ? Would it also be possible to advise on the heating that will be required if they stay outside. Thanks |

Yes they can stay outside all year round. Providing you provide them with an insulated heated shed/kennel or the like. Depends on how long you want your enclosure home to last them as to the size you provide. Obviously they are only little now so maybe a kennel or chicken coup & either a small tubular heater or ceramic heat emitter bulb would heat it - with a thermostat.
My small hermans have been outside in a shed all year round - the bigger ones hibernated. |

Thanks Lynn, so from Nov onwards would it be best if they hibernated ? or can I just leave them with a heated outdoor enclosure. What substrate would be best for the enclosure ?

to be honest if you aren't hibernating it would probably be cheaper to over winter them in the house, you will need to be providing the same heat/light conditions as you would in an indoor table. The shed would need to be very well insulated and even then I still think your house would be cheaper, even if you decide to hibernate there will still be a period either side ie autumm and spring when its to cold for a tort to go outside so again the indoor table would be a cheaper option, at least while they are still small and you have the room. I don't think there are many who opt to over winter outside without having spent a fortune on a building that will stay warm.

Thanks for the reply, at present my indoor table is only about 4x2, I could build a 2nd level on top but have no more room to supply a bigger table length wise. At present time due to the nice weather they have bben out from 8am - 7pm, so I am a bit loathed to leave them in a small table
