Hi, different species together is not advised, and as far as i know there is no cross breed.

It is possible for the 2 species to cross breed.

Thanks Dan, for your knowledge. So would seperation just be a preferance, or risk of the keeper.

Hi William,

Although it may be possible to cross breed these 2 different species it is not really advisable, it is far better to keep the species pure so any eggs produced should really be destroyed.

Also some speceies are more amourous when mating than others and different species may not be able to cope with this so the tortoise in question may become very stressed as a result.

I hope this helps.

hi William i know of one hermans female that died due to the constant attempts at mateing by a spurthighed male, this is a real danger as hermans shells arent as thick or robust as other species because of the different mateing rituals.also for that matter hermans have thicker and tougher skins so when the situation is reverse the hermans males constant biteing and of course their horny tail tip when mounting the female can cause some nasty injuries to the spurthighed female as well as causing undue stress which could easily encourage a bout of runny nose syndrome.i have been asked to incubate eggs produced from a mateing between these 2 species in the past (any mateing acctivity even gravid females acting like males can encourage the production of eggs) and none have ever shown any signs of fertility.so there is no positive reason for mixing these two species and every danger of injury and even fatality.
