Hi Simon,
Well i was advised to look for bright eyes, not sunken in& active, just stand & watch the group if you get the chance, then pick one of the active ones.
I can only tell you what i did, i offered food the same day, my baby hermanns ate all i gave her, i bathed her the next day.
