They say (research) you should pick a tree or plant area or something in the garden or near to you that makes you smile, and isn't associated with the loved one/pet/loss, but associate it with them now and every time you see it let it remind you of them and it does ease the pain of losing, as the mind associates the nice 'object' with nicer thoughts than the loss.
