They are wood burnings or pyrography (lit:fire writing), you use a pyrography tool a bit like a soldering iron, with either a solid point or a wire tip (I upgraded to wire tip a couple of years ago, it's more of a pro level thing, entry level models are basically soldering irons) to draw your design and burn it straight into the wood. It's a bit like using a tattoo machine, there are no second chances, the mark you lay down is there for good.
I do have one I did of Righ years ago. It's playing card sized and is stuck to the front of his viv.
