Ha! Spoke to a vet today, who had no idea there are different sub-species of Hermanns and didn’t have a clue what her own is! Won’t repeat the rest of the conversation, which was actually nothing to do with why I was in the vets as it was a passing of pleasantries that led to a conversation about rehoming animals and I mentioned the torts I’ve adopted.
I can only conclude most, not all, but most vets have limited knowledge of tortoises unless they are exotic specialists (and even then I know of one who is clueless!).

Having spoken many times to G on here, on the phone and in person, I can only conclude he knows much more than three vets I have had personal dealings with!
Of course he knows lots about lots of things, especially certain types of intimate clothing, and possibly much more besides! Plus knows sweet FA about lots of other stuff, but sexing a tort clearly isn’t something vets are sure about!

I also notice said vet, the OP, hasn’t bothered to comment back on this thread.
How rude!

Rant over.....

A debate is good, but talking to a vet today really wound me up at the sheer lack of general husbandry knowledge. Honestly, it shocked me! Not knowing the recommmended diet or substrate is just beyond belief, she admitted she didn’t know where to chip tortoises but could google it and didn’t even have any idea of the sex or sub-species of her own despite it being adult.
The mind boggles!

I was only in there for a post-op check up with my newest doggie!
And my head has just gone pop.

And what's wrong with Google you really think in know what I'm blabbing on about
