I'm a big advocate of Fridge hibernation, but only if the fridge has never been used for food or is relatively new and been very thoroughly cleaned first.
I don't understand why any owner would risk hibernating a tortoise in an environment that is only designed to 'slow' the growth of germs.

I'm sure many people have spotless food fridges that are cleaned every week and I'm sure most of them wouldn't dream of keeping a living breathing hibernating tortoise in their Salad Draw.
