I don't seem to have much trouble with most tortoises outside as pairs. The only troublesome ones are my male T.g.ibera and they never get to stay with the females for long.
I'd give him a few weeks off if he starts again, than put him back with the female and see how it goes. If he keeps doing it, than seperate for the summer would be the way to go.
