The damp soil so that he can dig into it is a good thing in that it will reduce dehydration. The water dish is important as well.

As others have suggested weeds and flowers rather than salad is a much better diet.

Something I have used for sealing wood for tortoise tables is 2 part epoxy paint used for sealing fish ponds....

Won't have caught the cold from you so not your fault! When we first got our leopard tortoise years ago she got the runny nose and sneezing. Baytril and keeping warm sorted her out quite quickly.
