question about moss for redfoots
 

hi there on browseing the web i came across this website

this person uses moss in his redfoot enclosure ..
i was wondering if any 1 else used it ..
and if so what are there thoughts on it and this persons set up in genral ..
would the moss be better than sand and soil mix for makeing humidity levels .

Becks, I don't use the whole sphagum moss, but the chewed up version otherwise known as peat moss here. I find it keeps the humidity nice and high. For small ones I'd use both together. I don't use any UVB on my redfoot either and she's growing just perfect. I do suppliment though.

wow dan i thought all torts required uv, can i ask ya what supplements u use for the d3, i know nutrobal has d3 in it and is supposed to be safe to use to supplement for d3??

hey carl with redfoots they get there main source of d3 from there diet.
in the wild as they live in the forest they do not get alot of uv from sunlight ..

in the wild there diet is weeds plants flowers and moss also insects and meat from dead animals ...

so is the d3 from insects and meat then??

Andy and used no UVB for our baby reds but found that they were not very active and didnt eat much, so we tried a trex bulb and the difference is amazing they are alot more active, however i think for new hatchlings no uvb should be used for a month or so.
Yes they get most of teh D3 from their diet and some from the sun, im a rain forest there will be little gaps in the trees where sun will shine through.
