Im new and need advice

Hi All :) I am a new owner of a marginated tortoise, ( since June). All has been going well, then last week I noticed a small black lump on his left back leg, I have been checking it daily, and it hadnt changed. Today when I picked him up, a straight black thing was coming out of his leg, his microchip I presume. It doesnt look infected. Has this happened to anyone else ? Any advice woud be greatly appreciated

Thanks Sarah

Hello Sarah and welcome. It does sound like the chip, they can move around. I've never seen it happen, but I'm sure it can, as to what to do about it, I don't know , other than go a see your nearest reptile vet, and see it they can put it back in. I suppose, just leaving it is an option, unless you are going to sell him again, he doesn't need to be chipped. But I'm not sure about the rules, as he has been sold to you, does that chip have to stay in ? Not sure. You could ask defra.

Hi Suze, and ty for reply :) His leg looks fine today, doesnt even look sore, and hes whizzing around, must have been painful for him. I wont be selling him so dont think I will have it put back in, I think hes actually too small, from what I have read, and it was so big compared to his little leg :( Will keep my eye on it, any probs I will call the vet, Thanks Again :)

To stop any bacteria getting in, bathe in diluted iodine or even an antiseptic like savlon. Getting iodine in for minor tortoise cuts etc, is very useful:0)
There are a few other products for tortoises but I cant remember them:0)

Also remember , tortoise skin heals slowly , you can also try F10 barrier cream , you can get this from a vet or a good reptile supplier. I also agree that chips are being put into torts that in my opinion a are far too small.
