We are blessed however, with the Hermann's Tortoise as there is also Wolfgang Wegehaupt's book Naturalistic Keeping and breeding of Hermann's Tortoises which also is a masterclass in the subject. |

its a great book , well worth getting

Yeah I'm amazed at how much food torts really eat in the wild, and the fact they eat fruit but we get told not to feed fruit
|
Two things about the fruit a Hermanns tortoise encounters in the wild;
It's availability is seasonal, not constant. It bears little relation to the fruit we eat, which is engineered to be fructose heavy, appealing to our sweet tooth. From that book, I have added wild blackberries in small quanties (equating to one or two per tortoise per week) to the diet of my Hermanns, when they are available in the autumn |
What about apples off trees, there are some pear and apple trees in the woods is used for cider but are on public paths would they be diff to the fruit we eat
