laying eggs

hi guys, this will probably be my first med post. but it should be relevant to all tortoises.

whats the deal with tortoises laying eggs???? i ask because kerris cousin has a older female hermann and i was wondering why it has never laid eggs in the 7 years she has had it, do they need to mate to lay eggs or is it too unhealthy to lay eggs???

Becks 28-08-2006 11:44 PM

carl i think they need a male to lay eggs m8 ..
ive heard of females laying infertile eggs when they have been with a male in the past ..
its not cause the tort is unhealthy ..
im sure if im wrong some 1 will correct me luv becksxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

carl20 28-08-2006 11:45 PM

oh ok i just though that they might lay infertile eggs without contact with a male, dont chickens do that??

Henry-flash 28-08-2006 11:47 PM

Actually I think they can lay eggs with or without a male. I mean chickens lay eggs without the presence of a male :?

tortoise_dude 28-08-2006 11:50 PM

They usually do it when they have been with males or come into contact with a new tort- male or female

Becks 28-08-2006 11:51 PM

well i know someone will have the answer on this forum, anyway the lass told me that if i new of a an adult male thb that could have relations with her tort once or twice then i could have the eggs to incubate and i could keep the babies if the eggs turned out to be fertile, i got well excited :D :D but i dont know any1 local with an adult male hermann never mind whether or not they would let it have relations with my friends tortoise

Hi Carl19 How old is this female,And how big is she,How is she keeping her.Tortoise dont need a male to go in egg production. It can help in egg production having a male around,But its not all ways needed.

carl20 29-08-2006 12:34 AM

the female is smaller than i first estimated, the bottom of the shell is about 7 inches long, the age is unknown, maybe 20
she is being kept badly, iceberg lettuce for food however out in the garden with access to weeds when it is warm but housed indoors when it is cold with no heat or uv source and no calcium or nutrobal.

The poor diet Carl is why she hasn't laid Carl. Even if she was with a male I don't think she has enough fat to produce yolks and not enough extra calcium to shell eggs :( .
