Can I show off my new table? :)

Hello!!! I adopted my horsefield tortoises a couple months ago from a lady who was needing to move quite urgently back to England (I'm in Belfast) and she couldn't take the tortoises with her. My boys and I adoooooore them and have named them Timmy and Taco despite being girls! They came with a vivexotic table but I felt it was too small so I bought a frame in IKEA and two lack tables and this is the end result! They're more active over the past couple of days than they've been in weeks and eating more. I'm taking that as a good sign!

Does this whole setup look ok?? Any advice on things to change etc?

There you go we can all see it now:)
One thing that does need changing is throw those horible grass pellets in the bin and use some top soil as the will be able to dig down in it.
What tube do you have in the light fitting and what are you using for heat.
Looking good by the way:lol::lol::lol:

Oooooh dunno why it didn't work before lol!!

I have an exo terra porcelain glow light clamp thingy with a 150W bulb (temp sitting at 35 where Timmy is lying)... and the tube is a 10w 24 inch exo terra one.... I have soil under the grass pellets.... thinking maybe they'd like different textures?

it might not have worked because your posts are moderated until you have reached 5 posts, it might be that or something else :)

Horsfields are a digging species, so the substrate (soil works best) needs to be really deep.
Great that you have the heat up the other end from their housing:0)
Just be really careful they dont climb up and over anything against the edges of the enclosure. As Horsfields are the best climbers in the tortoise world too:0) They will be up and over before you can blink:0)
Also sand on its own (I think thats whats under the heat) is not good as it can easily get into their eyes, and cause eye problems.
Diet should be weeds and flowers. And less rather than more, as we as keepers tend to over feed our tortoises.
You have to think tortoise not human:0)

Lovely picture.

All good advice you have received.

I put their food on an old tile, but also on a flat rock. Although it always went everywhere too!

Agree with all of the above, get rid of the pellets and sand, just use top soil and nothing else. Keep it deep and keep it moist.

I nearly had kittens Emma G - Keep an eye on the bridges ! they will climb on top and then on top of each other and it'll be good bye tortoise table hello carpet run ! And the pot - ...they are such little rascals Horsfields - ive seen them dig down and under a wooden railway sleeper and climb up wire and objects you think couldn't possibly hold an acrobatic hamster but up, over, down under and away. they trot.
all good advice on here and yes ditch those pellets quick as a substrate - Horsfields will eat anything going, testing it or digesting it - which they won't them and if they pee in sand and burrow in it you will have a bigger issue ! All good though and love your idea of using Ikea. CB
