Hello!
I am Catherine! I live in the South West and I am hoping to own a Hermann's tortoise soon. I am still researching various aspects of tortoise ownership but here is an opening question for you - considering that a 'proper breeder' may be a long drive away from me, what do you recommend I transport the tortoise home in to keep stress levels to a minimum?

Hi & sorry I didn't realise when I posted my introduction that I wasn't supposed to ask a question here!

Hi and welcome xx

Hi Catherine and welcome to shelled warriors.
If you travel a distance to collect a tortoise you could use a tupperware type box with holes in the lid and some soil in it. My other suggestion is that you don't want the tortoise to be too warm. Keep the box out of direct sunlight and ideally keep it cool on the journey. When I say cool I mean maybe between 10 and 15C. |
Hi Catherine and welcome.
There are a few good breeders in the south area and not too far to travel depending on where you are. I agree with the others however and keeping the box cool is good advice. Torts generally aren't fond of the car and will open their bowels so once you get any tort home a nice bath to clean them up, allow them to have a soak and a drink is something I've always done. |
Welcome Catherine.
Good luck with your search for your tort. Look forward to some photos in the future. |
tea towel bottom - they don't slip if plastic then - tea towel top - nice and dark so they don't get anxious. but principles are as Jonathan and others have said - safe and quiet. A take some extra toilet roll for poop heaven. Welcome to the forum and good luck.

Wow! Great advice thanks! I've recently started reading the 'Naturalistic keeping and breeding of Hermann's tortoises' book, which I'm finding fascinating (but also sad learning about the loss of natural habitat). I'm in the process of setting-up for the new arrival - but it seems I shouldn't take too long about it now or it will be too late to have one this year?
