Suze65 21-05-2016 02:51 PM

Ooohhhh what a proper lovely enclosure, I'm saving that one for my enclosure file ( ideas and stuff )

Stellanne 21-05-2016 03:03 PM

Thank you, it is a lovely space for them. They can get on with life without getting into too much mischief x x x hugs x x x

CherryBrandy 21-05-2016 06:11 PM

Did you build the blue home or buy? I am thinking of getting a log store for some of mine...not to store them but if plastic sheeting over may make cheap little house. CB

Stellanne 21-05-2016 06:21 PM

I had it made specially...... Though when I explained what I needed the joiner said' so basically a rabbit hutch' nnnooooo!!!! It is double layered and insulated. If I was doing it again I would make it wider though there is ample space. X x x. Hugs x x

CherryBrandy 21-05-2016 06:42 PM

I love it Stellanne. whole set up is terrific and your Torts are gorgeous, CB

Suze65 21-05-2016 07:14 PM

Would you mind posting a picture of the whole tort house, inside and out. For my ideas file, thank you xxx

emma_mcraf 21-05-2016 07:23 PM

It really is lovely. You've created such a lovely enclosure for them. :-)

Suze65 21-05-2016 07:24 PM

I see, one could make something similar from a log store, I think. Does it have electrics too, with uv and basking ? Or just heat.

Suze.......I have pictures of the kit somewhere, and the digging involved.....underneath it is about 3 ft deep, insulated with 2inches of insulating stuff, which surrounds Breeze blocks and is lined with pond liner!!!!! It sounds complicated but really wasn't x x xx hugs x x

Sorry I meant the little blue house, not the whole enclosure 😁.

Stellanne 21-05-2016 07:32 PM

Tort Lodge and the greenhouse have electrics, heat in the spring..... Uv when they are awake but can't get out much. The roof of the Lodge is supposed to let Uv in.....but I don't rely on it. Outside there are two lamps which create heat which are used early spring and autumn to encourage activity x x x xhugs x x x

Thanks very much, im just wondering what to put in my shed for my lot, I'm converting it for them. Not sure if to put a tube heater, or basking spot and uv or just heat. Thanks

I have everything I need set up......and then use it as I think it is needed. It was easy to sort it when developing the area x x xhugs x x

I can see why you call it Tort Lodge Gardens. Such luxury.

Yes, I would be interested to see more detail as we are just about to start building a new indoor pen, that will actually be in an out building, with access to outside (secured inside and out). The one we cobbled together is just not right and I like the look of the lamps on yours.

Do they hibernate in the house?

Jan W 21-05-2016 09:02 PM

Oops sorry I hadn't looked at page 2.

Yes they hibernate in both Tort Lodge and the Conservatory extension {greenhouse}. Both places are insulated and with deep soil. Heating is regulated to 5 degrees. Hibernation is just a matter of monitoring from September...... Then roll on Spring x x xx x hugs x x x

Thank you.

How deep is the soil?

I would really like to try and let them hibernate more naturally, but we have a high water table, so the greenhouse would be hopeless.

Stellanne 22-05-2016 07:44 PM

The soil is about four feet deep...... The hole lined with pond liner to keep water out........I can then keep it damp and it doesn't get too wet x x x. Hugs x x

CherryBrandy 24-05-2016 04:45 PM

I'm useless aren't I ! it's a hell of a chicory plant - is it for toothache? what's chicory for ? CB

Stellanne 24-05-2016 06:04 PM

The torts love them.......
As a herb it increases the milk flow of nursing mothers, if that is any help and I guess like most herbs a police could be made to reduce swelling.
The plug plants were bought from Naturescape X x x x hugs x x xx
