Off topic Epiphyllums
 

Just wondering if anyone else keeps them:0)

I've been trying to grow orchid cactus for many, many years. I buy healthy plants that eventually die. . . not in a week or two, but a year or two later. I've never had one bloom, but they're usually blooming when I buy them. I'm down to one plant now.

If you have them, can we see pictures? And do you maybe have some helpful hints for me to keep my plants alive?

I have only just started with cuttings, I saw another tortoise keeper who kept epis and they have beautiful flowers on them, so I thought I would have a go. I know they dont like being over watered, or midday sun, which for me the sun is a problem at the moment, as I dont have any shady bits in my garden. So have them in the greenhouse, with window and door open. Its bubble wrapped to keep most of the suns glare off:0)

I've just looked them up and they look lovely, Sandy.
I keep ‎Phalaenopsis and Easter Cacti, which is near as I can get to Epiphyllums. I quite fancy researching them and will see if my local garden centre can get them in.

I have both those too Emma, when I saw the flowers I fell in love:0)
I have been buying cuttings off of Ebay, they are looking healthy. So I hope to get some flowering in the next two years. Although some take longer:0) The cuttings are rooted mostly, but I have a couple that are not to have ago:0)

do you put them in water to begin with Sandy?
They are lovely , and like Emma I have the Christmas cacti and Easter one with jagged edges. Can they live indoors do you know?
I have just seeded some poppies and have bought my first Aeonium this year , indoors ....not sure is spelling is right (not of indoors , I can spell that), CB

Well the normal way to treat cuttings are to let the end seal over (up to two weeks somewhere coolish) then put into a epip mix (dont water) then leave until roots for, then repot. But again dont water for a couple of weeks to allow the roots to settle. Always use rainwater.
But there is another way apparently, to make a V on the cut end of the cutting, then put it into rain water (shallow) mark a clear plastic cup/glass to top end of the V. Keep topped up with rain water.
I am trying both methods:0) The cuttings I bought have now just started to root. Only tiny roots. But the roots need a little longer before potting on. They have taken around three weeks to just starting to root. The ones in water have only been there around a week.
They cannot take temps below 10c so need to be in a room/greenhouse/conservatory where you can use heat for them. They can go outside in pots during the Summer months:0)
