Sulcata housing

Hi. Would a salcata need a uv light in an outdoor enclosure? What temperature should they have for this time of year/over the winter months? Thanks

I am no expert on sulcata husbandry but for good environmental and husbandry I would say yes to both UV A&B as s/he wont be getting it from the winter months here and her health will suffer otherwise and for sulcata's up to 34 degrees, though I would suggest 29 - 30 will keep her or him ticking over nicely as long as s/he doesn't get cold and have to warm up. If you don't keep her warm her food wont pass through and will stagnant in her gut / bowel and or worse s/he wont eat at all. hope that's ok , someone with more knowledge may post also of course , but that's the basics, CB

Sulcatas will need UV and an extra heat sorce during the whole year in an outside enclosure, as they get bigger they take longer to heat up to be able to digest their food and absorb the UV.
And temps will need to be in the 35-40c to keep them healthy.

Hi I don't keep Sulcata but have for the last 20 years kept Leopard tortoises from hatchlings I have raised to be adults producing fertile eggs them selves. To answer your question I need to know your location roughly. The size of your Sulcata and theIr diet.

Forgive me for digging up a somewhat old'ish thread.....

I'm in the process of planning an outdoor enclosure with plenty of windows for light/uv etc. I live in the Shetland Islands where UV levels are high but I'm not sure about using additional uv in the winter months as suggested above. In winter our daylight is from around 9/10am through to around 3pm.

I wondered about getting a uv meter to measure all year round?
