'P...... at H......' selling torts, geckos and dragons in Nov

Hey guys

Was in my local ............ store and got chatting to one of the girls in there and she has a 60 year old tort at home .. she then went on to inform me that as of November all stores shall be selling torts, geckos and dragons. Some stores already trial this but its being rolled out across all.

Without me even asking she said that her manager (also a tort keeper) is enquiring as to what they are supplying the torts with i.e. Not a Vivarium. She mentioned about tort tables - Hopefully they have some sense!

Not sure what 'accessories' they will be selling but my guess is bulbs etc...

Fingers crossed they roll it out properly and not exploit the little things in a cheap selling/profit way.

yeah they've had them in Hartlepool one now for a few weeks. The girl there was really helpful too, and suprisingly well informed in the bits and bobs.

i was after one of those ornamental sign posts like you get in fish tanks that say 'gone fishing' or whathaveyou. But naively hoping on the off chance they'd have tortoise related ones, like 'Warning - Tortoise'.

But to no avail.

Paulo_peach.... If you go on ebay they have a great one that says beware of the tortoise.. They did have it anyways.. .

I saw they were doing that aswell, their pamplet gives newbie tort owners a list of things to buy for your tort and it includes a heat mat:-?

What is wrong with any of the items mentioned in this thread... nothing.

I'll chalk it up to inexperience and misinformation.

I have them, there were only about £2 each or so but I only have them on their indoor enclosures as outdoors it lets potential thieves know you've got torts

I'm going to assume this was directed at me and yes im inexperienced but what the general concensus seems is heat mat for hermanns = no. However like I said I'm inexperienced and so would really like to know if they aren't as bad as every1 says. So please enlighten me:D

Ed I have had rehomed torts that are burnt but heat mats!!! If used properly I am sure that they can be fine, but if no info is given they are flipin awful things. I don't use them and never would but I know some people use them well.

Pets at home in my area are giving misleading and unhelpful advice, they certainly did to me when I posed as prospective customer the other day. I do not believe a tortoise can sit on a heat mat all day and get what it needs, but was told this by an assisatant.

Thier info sheet is great, talks about the right kind of diet being low in sugars and protein etc, but they were feeding strawberries, beans and kale with low quality pellets to boot!! We had words about this though!!!

They also told out and out lies, which eventually I had to challenge them on. They were telling me they were UKCB and I knew they weren't as the company as a whole has admitted they are imports. I think the shop assisstants honestly belived the lies they had been spun too! When we finally got to the Article 10 I pointed to the Country of Originl: Slovenia section and the game was up!!!! LOL

well i have to speak as i find, i spoke to the young chap in charge of the tortoise
they sent the staff on a 2 day course before selling the torts}
he was quite clued up, maybe not quite to this groups standards, but much better than the other local pet shop selling tortoise
he said they would love to sell uk bred tortoises but there is no breeders coming forward
i think they are trying with all the animals they sell, after all you can walk into any other pet shop and if you have the money can walk off with any animal without a thought of how to look after it, all you need is to look over 16yrs
i dont like goldfish bowls, rabbit hutches, round bird cages, balls that you put hamsters in, yet millions of animals suffer this fate
about 2 years ago argos was selling a toy blender as a goldfish home, it vibrated and made a noise, but there was not one person who petitioned the removal of this
