2 questions...

1, confirmation that Fiorano is a 'she'! Lol
And
2, The plastron appears to be cracked? should i be concerned about this?
She does seem to have grown pretty quick in the last month, from 97g to 113g in 1 month, is now at 79mm, I do not have the orignal carapace length :(

I have put the pictures as links, theyre just under 2mb each.

Looks female to me

Herpard 01-10-2011 08:05 PM

Looks female to me too!

And I can't see any cracks?

RacingSnake 01-10-2011 08:29 PM

In the third 'segment' up, there is an arc which looks like a crack? I mean I dont recall it not being there, but its not present on our other little lady!

egyptiandan64 01-10-2011 10:46 PM

I agree :) Looking very female. She also looks like a Dalmation Hermanns, T.h.hercegovinensis to me. Thats not a crack but a line in the abdominal scute. It happens quite a bit with Hermanns and is nothing to worry about.

How come everyone else has female Hermanns and mine are male? they look the same to me

ziggy's owner 02-10-2011 12:31 AM

Lol I have females and want more lol, but I'll find some at the right price

suttysue 02-10-2011 10:31 AM

RacingSnake 02-10-2011 08:51 PM

Thanks Guys :D
And Dan, good to hear about the line!!

RacingSnake 04-11-2012 10:52 AM

Hi Guys,
Almost a year down the line, and am looking for re-confirmation of the above...
Reason being that we caught "Fiorano" humping Valentino's face
I picked up Fiorano, and there were no obvious signs

Anyway, after separating them, about half an hour later, 'she' was back humping again , so I fed them which sorted that out for now, but almost immediately afterwards, yep, humping again.

So, 2 new photo's for identification/confirmation please!!!
(Fiorano is the first one, and is much bigger than Valentino, despite only 3 months age difference - both coming up to 2 years old)

Many thanks!

First one looks male, second female :-)

Their anal scutes look pretty much the same though lol

Danny will know :-)

Suze65 04-11-2012 11:34 AM

I agree, first one male, second one female.

TillyTortoise 04-11-2012 11:39 AM

Me too :D I think Fiorano is male and Valentino is female :D

RacingSnake 04-11-2012 11:40 AM

Damn!
Does this mean I need to think about separating them?

Herpard 04-11-2012 01:14 PM

Get him a tortoise shaped ornament.

I keep my 2 adult Hermanns together fine, he rarely hassles her to mate cause he spends his time humping his ornament lol.

egyptiandan64 04-11-2012 01:23 PM

I agree :D first one male and second one female

Danny

Easter Bunny 04-11-2012 01:54 PM

I was going to say the same..1st male and 2nd female xx

RacingSnake 04-11-2012 02:01 PM

Thanks guys.

I know it can be difficult to sex them, and in the space of a year, Fiorano has gone from definate female, to definate male! :o

What am I looking for?

Oh, and will look out for a distraction ornament for him! Ll

Ozric Jonathan 04-11-2012 11:38 PM

I've also had a couple of tortoises that were confidently thought to be one sex and a couple of years later were ID'd as being the opposite one.

Easter Bunny 04-11-2012 11:41 PM

I look at the shape of the anal scutes.. If they are square I say female. If they are more rectangler I say male. Aswell as looking at the tail :D

Ozric Jonathan 06-11-2012 02:33 PM

I don't disagree with Lynne but quite a lot of our sexing of young tortoises on these pages turns out not to be accurate.

RacingSnake 06-11-2012 02:49 PM

^^ I think it's probably safe to 'assume' you should wait until approx 2 years before getting a more reliable gender identification?

For a temporary distraction of Fiorano I've put half a coconut shell in the house - it's sort of tortoise shaped :D

RacingSnake 22-01-2013 02:27 PM

Next update...

I saw Valentino (the female) "humping" Fiorano today... bit of a role reversal I thought!.
Certainly raised my suspicions!

Anyway, bathing them today, and it does indeed appear that Valentino... (our confirmed twice female), is in fact also a male!!

So, it appears we have 2 gay tortoises

cherylahutch 22-01-2013 02:39 PM

Could it not be a dominance thing? One of my girls climbs on top of elvis quite oftern he doesn't seem to mind tho lol

RacingSnake 22-01-2013 02:41 PM

not unless "she" has a willy

egyptiandan64 22-01-2013 02:53 PM

How big was the "willy"?

Danny

cherylahutch 22-01-2013 03:00 PM

Danny

I only saw a bit of it as it disappeared again, but it was about 'pea' size :D bless!

egyptiandan64 22-01-2013 05:23 PM

Being only pea sized and seemingly not long, it very well could have been "girl parts". ;) But by all means post a new plastron and tail picture. :D

Danny

RacingSnake 22-01-2013 05:37 PM

So ladies flash their bits too?! how rude :o :D
Will get another photo, but will keep an eye on 'her' too!
