Horsfield - Eye
 

Hi all,

So this is my firs post in this forum (Though I've used it a my information encyclopedia for the past couple of years!)

I have a problem with one of my torts Tilly, she has an eye infection/ swollen eye which isn't the first time for you. Shes on a tortoise table, with only top soil (no sand) and the soil is kept moist so not too dusty on the eyes. I have 2 other and they've both never had a problem (I've had them for 10 & 8 years now.

I want to get some eye drops for Tilly as I think she may just have something caught in it, but I don't need the expense of a vet to tell me this again. Does anybody know what eye drops are best to use for tortoise which I can buy without a prescription. Obviously is the problem carries on I will take her, but at this moment it seems the same problem has occurred as last year.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed

Optrex infected eyes ( or stores own generic version which contains same
active ingredient: the antibiotic - which I cant spell!! Chloramphenical or very similar :) If you opt for optrex, pardon the pun :) make sure its this one as they are the only optrex with antibiotic.

If collecting from a pharmacy don't say they are for animal use, nod wink! & I believe you can order them from Amazon if you have trouble getting them.

my vet gave me FUCILTHALMIC eye ointment (not sure if that's the correct spelling) why don't you give your Vet a call to ask if you can just buy some without a consultation.

I remember reading somehwere that there is a link between swollen eyes and vitamin d,maybe a vet check would be advisable

It's lack of vitamin A that can swell the eye lids Jackie :D

Danny I went to the same school as the person who advertised the Asian torts lol x

I have her on the optrex drops now and its looking better already. I will try and boost her foods with some multi vitamin... Winter has been hard this year for the little ones.. Just not enough natural variety, could well be a vitamin deficiency. Thank you for that, much appreciated :)
