Rough surface egg
Hi,
My star tortoise recently lay an egg with rough surface. Anyone has idea what cause it ? Some said not enough calcium Some said staying too long inside the torts Pls help |

If its rough and could have a sort of sparkle about it, then its possible its an over calcified egg. This can happen if the female cant find a suitable nesting site with correct temps:0) |
I agree its an over calcified egg. I lost 3 hatchlings just last week. They pipped but promptly died😩 I noticed the eggshell was very hard. I spoke to Dan & of the possible reasons we went through the likeliest cause seems to be Mom being gravid & not liking the nest sites offered. These eggs weren't actually rough, but were too hard for the hatchlings to break out of easily.
I wouldn't incubate a rough egg. |
Thx
One more question, for the past few years, my tortoise only lay 1 or 2 eggs per clutch. And almost everytime, the egg burst during laying Any idea? |

Thx a lot
I just bring her to vet for x ray check Vet said the egg shell not clearly visible through x ray Thus, lack of calcium should be the reason for burst egg |

How old is your tortoise.

An infertile egg that is way past its hatch date will also explode, it's as the insides start to rot, the gases expand the egg until the egg explodes, also lack of calcium causes a thin egg shell. One of mine keeps breaking eggs on actual laying because egg shells are too thin.
A rough egg is a calcified egg, the Tortoise has retained the egg for too long, usually because there's no attractive nesting site. |
